and lieutenant george are cinco of the newtown police department and the connecticut state police from what we know and don't know about yesterday's shooting at sandy hook elementary school. we know that the gunman has been didn't fied as 20-year-old adam lanza who first killed his mother and went to a kindergarten class in the school where he worked killing 27 people. 20 children, six adults and himself. two handguns were found at the school as well as a semiautomatic rifle. law enforcement told officials that the gun was licensed to the gunman's mother. president obama will address the media in his weekly address. we'll have that later. but some hope that he might make an effort to tackle gun control for the first time. the shooting the deadliest in history as raised questions about the gun laws but also school security and preparation. we're going to msnbc's chris jansing who is outside of nowtown in connecticut this morning. chris, can you give us an idea of what we're learning, what new facts have we acquired? >> from the time, chris, went off the air last night, we saw a large exodus fro

in connecticut. >> is there anything that can be done? it seems like it's an issue that has to be on a national level which is why i think, tough mayors? is there anything that can be done at the level of, say, philadelphia governance. >> we have passed some laws in philadelphia and some have made it past the nra lawsuit. and have been sustained by our pennsylvania supreme court. but states and the federal government, there should be a series of pretty strong policies across the united states of america. and then, either states or local governments can enhance, if he want to, but should never be able to low-ball. the u.s. conference of mayors we advocated three major things. one, there should be an assault weapons' ban across united states. no reason for a civilian to ever have an assault rifle, machine gun, multiclips, and so the second part is the large magazines. >> machine guns are banned. >> fully automatic weapons. >> right. if you're putting out hundreds of rounds, you know, a minute, i heap, i'm not going to get into a debate about semiautomatic or automatic, it's a lot. right? large ma

seeing him at a republican event in the 'fwhooirnts in connecticut at a congressional race. he was -- he spent a decade and he may have spent two decades traveling around the country to competitive districts. he has a lot of personal relationships within the caucus even though there's a lot of new members. this is a real leadership test in navigating the fiscal cliff. we saw the debt ceiling debate a year and a half ago. that was a political disaster. a real tough position for john boehner. he had all the freshmen and many of them tea-part backed members that didn't want to compromise at all and yet, he was able to thread that needle politically and policywise. we don't want another debacle like that again. >> when president obama won in 2008, the onions title was -- black man wins nation's worst job. now i feel like we have, white man has nation's worst job. i feel sorry for john boehner. the reality is he's leading a house which is actually looking to not the 53% of americans that want do not want to see the yes go around the fiscal curve which is what the polls are showing but that's

the prospects for a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff, congressman jim himes, democrat from connecticut. congressman, there are some in both parties, i don't know, maybe they wouldn't admit it, they don't think it's the worst thing in the world to go over temporarily. where are you? >> you know, i think there's some chance we get a deal in the early weeks of january which means technically you are going over the cliff. if you vote on the deal that john boehner couldn't get done in his conference thursday, if you vote on that in january, a deficit deal than december. it's actually a tax decrease. i don't think nothing is going to happen in the coming weeks. it is possible we get into the first week of january before something to vote on. congress has gotten used to doing things at the last minute and it's not exactly clear when the last minute is here. >> i've been saying for a while you don't have to deal with 400 or 500 grand, get 250, what the president has wanted all along and get the republicans to not vote for a tax cut for everybody under 250. why hasn't that been the strategy or

, all night people in newtown, connecticut are paying tribute. a candle lit for each child an adult thrown there. they will take half hour shifts to make sure the candles are burning. people in newtown getting through the first christmas after the horrible rampage. one mother said it's all about the kids and being with family and the entire police force got the day off thanks to officers from other communities who are pitching in for them. >> well, you're looking there at live pictures of pope benedict at the vatican giving his christmas message as we speak, and this year he says we need to make room for god. during midnight mass he said the faster we can move the more efficient our time-saving appliances will be, we don't make room for god, for the children, for the poor, for strangers. he also called for peace in the middle east and an end to the violence in syria. >>> coach chuck pagano will once again stand with his team on the sidelines. we'll have more on that inspiring story about the coach's cancer fight coming up. certainly is inspiring, and as we go to break, we'll look at

this kind of damage. >> i the weekend showed that in new jersey, connecticut, and other areas where we use the flood insurance map programs and homes or elevated, many of them had a minimal damage and were able to be read occupied one power that came back. -- homes not elevated were often destroyed. city-wide mitigation may be more effective strategy. i would also caution about going underground. everything in manhattan was underground including hospitals and emergency room that were flooded by salt water and destroyed. where does it make sense to talk about this on a homeowner basis? where is this talk that we will have to look at mitigating a part of a community that piece by piece will not address the overall impacts. we are going to work with gail glass and state and with the science community. -- with the scientists and the state and with the science community. once you get into a dense urban area, the solution will not work. we have to focus on that type of infrastructure and the best way to mitigate future damage. >> thank you. >> thank you very much. in your area when katrina hit,
